or take pack trips 2 to 3 months annually. I field

Recommendation: Insure that you have guy ropes/side ropes on new canvas tents
when it rains/snows to insure it shrinks evenly for the normal
1-3% shrinkage. Otherwise your canvas tent may shrink unevenly
and may not fit your internal frame properly.

Always make a packing list before you go on a pack trip. You should keep your list on your computer and update it annually based on each packing trip experience.
I have several packing lists depending on the pack trip I am planning for. An extended 2-3 week pack trip or just a 4-5 day trip when a minimum number of items is required.
The biggest problem I have noticed with beginner packers is the failure to do a preload at home to insure all items will fit in panniers. Finding out at the trail head you don't have enough panniers or pack horses is not a good way to start a pack trip.
Canvas Tents are another problem for inexperienced packers. Many people make the mistake of rolling up canvas tents and trying to tie them on top of the pack saddle.
A rolled canvas tent on a pack saddle is a wreck waiting to happen. The canvas tent will roll off to one side and then you will have 50-70 lb. imbalance and there goes your pack saddle.
I recommend folding your tent in a rectangle, about 30" x 50". Manty the canvas tent or put it in a custom tent bag and lay it across the pack saddle. Then secure it with a lash cinch.

Canvas Tents
Selecting the correct canvas tent when packing in with horses depends on several factors.
When moving camp often, Pyramid Canvas Tents are recommended as they are easy to take down and set up due its one pole set up system.
Stationary camp. I prefer a canvas tent as it is normally larger, provides more headroom and more usable space due to its 5' side walls.
Spike canvas tents are another alternative if you move frequently and still want a larger tent. The spike canvas tent has few frame poles and normally weighs less than a comparable size canvas tent.
