Elk Studies:

  • Idaho - Elk Recruitement Study: Fish and Game is trying to understand why elk recruitment (annual addition of new calves to a herd) is low in some Game Management Units (GMUs) and pretty good in others. This study is still ongoing. IDFG has not updated the information since 2000 but a contact person is listed for the current status of the study.
  • Michael Lucid worked with IDFG big game biologists in capturing and collaring elk and deer in the statewide ungulate ecology study.  The research is looking at the performance of big game populations across the state and the influence that wolves and other carnivores are having on them.  If uncollared wolf packs are seen in the study areas, they will be darted and collared.  (Feb05)

State Organizations:

  • 50 State Fish and Game Agencies List: Link to all 50 states fish and game websites.
  • United Sportsmen Alliance of Idaho (USA4ID): Dedicated to educating Idaho Sportsmen and women about statewide issues that impact their sport.
  • Concerned Sportsmen of Idaho (CSI): is working hard to bring to light issues with an imbalance of preditors to prey. CSI is a grass-roots advocacy group founded in 1995 by people who hunt, fish, and trap in Idaho.  We are dedicated to preserving Idaho's sporting heritage and ensuring that the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) focus its efforts on providing ample quantities of fish and wildlife for sportsmen to hunt, fish, and trap.  The CSI plays an activist role in communicating sportsmen's' priorities and concerns to the IDFG and other governmental entities, while also seeking to educate sportsmen on the biological, sociological, and political influences that affect their interests.
